The Story of the Mendenhall Mall

A community landmark built on family, resilience, and a little Juneau magic.

More Than a Mall

Since 1977, the Mendenhall Mall has been a hub for shopping, dining, and community in Juneau’s Mendenhall Valley. What started as a family-built project has grown into a thriving center where local businesses, families, and neighbors come together. With nearly 100% occupancy today, the mall is alive with activity, from everyday essentials to unique boutiques, kid-friendly spaces, and community events.

Guided by Family, Rooted in Community

The Mendenhall Mall is owned and managed by Patsy Anderson-Dunn and her husband Kim Anderson. Patsy is the daughter of the mall’s original builders, Reinhold and Cheryl Fluck. When the mall returned to family ownership in 2020, it was at just 21% occupancy. With a clear vision and community-first mindset, Patsy and Kim led a revival, investing in upgrades, recruiting new businesses, and welcoming back the family-friendly atmosphere the mall is known for. Today, the mall is once again full of life, home to mostly women-owned and locally owned businesses.

From Skateland to Today

The story of the Mendenhall Mall began in 1977, when Reinhold (“Opa”) and Cheryl (“Nana”) Fluck broke ground, literally laying the blocks and plaster by hand. Each expansion through 1991 carried a family tradition: Patsy’s handprints pressed into the foundations. Over the years, the mall has hosted everything from Skateland roller rink and Bullwinkle’s Pizza to the Mendenhall Valley Library and Gottschalks department store.

While tenants have changed, many traditions remain. Today, alongside new businesses, coworking spaces, and children’s studios, the mall has returned to being a lively gathering place for families and neighbors, carrying forward both its history and its heart.
